For Native American heritage month, we are partnering with Butte Native Wellness Center to celebrate with Native voice films all month!
Smoke Signals (1998) is a groundbreaking Native American road movie that follows Victor Joseph and Thomas Builds-the-Fire, two young men from the Coeur d’Alene Reservation, as they journey to collect the ashes of Victor’s estranged father. Along the way, they confront painful family histories, cultural identity, and their contrasting personalities—Victor's anger and silence versus Thomas’s storytelling and optimism. The film explores themes of loss, forgiveness, and the power of stories in healing generational trauma, while offering a rare and authentic portrayal of modern Indigenous life. Paired with themes from Montana Indigenous Vote—a likely documentary focused on Native voter suppression and empowerment in Montana—the two works together highlight the ongoing struggles and resilience of Indigenous communities in shaping their narratives and asserting their rights, both personally and politically.
