Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee (2007) is a historical drama based on Dee Brown’s book, depicting the systematic displacement and cultural erasure of Native American tribes during the late 19th century as the U.S. expands westward. The film focuses on key figures such as Lakota Sioux leader Sitting Bull, who resists U.S. government control; Charles Eastman, a Sioux doctor educated in white institutions; and Senator Henry Dawes, architect of assimilationist policies. Through these intertwined narratives, the film explores the devastating impact of broken treaties, forced assimilation, and the loss of Indigenous lands and identity, culminating in the 1890 massacre at Wounded Knee. It presents a sobering portrayal of resistance, survival, and the tragic consequences of colonial expansion.
